

Northern Reeds
Northern Reeds was founded by five graduates of the RNCM (Manchester), and is the UK’s first established reed quintet.

Northern Reeds are the winners of the Royal Philharmonic Society Henderson Award (2022), the RNCM Fewkes Prize (2022), the June Emerson Prize (2022), and the RNCM Christopher Rowland Prize Audience Vote (2022). The group has performed at prestigious venues such as the Bridgewater Hall and the Stoller Hall. In 2024, they released their debut CD, featuring new commissions and arrangements.
The group was the first UK quintet to be admitted into Calefax’s International Reed Quintet Network and recently had the pleasure of collaborating with the group in judging the annual Calefax Composers Competition. Additionally, Northern Reeds has commissioned new works for reed quintet by composers such as Tak-Kei Wong and Eden Longson. The quintet was recently featured in articles by CASSGB and the British Double Reed Society.
Northern Reeds are honoured to be supported by the Royal Philharmonic Society Henderson Chamber Ensemble Award, June Emerson's Launchpad Prize, and the RNCM Fewkes Prize.

Hannah Seymour Oboist Hannah is studying as a Masters student at the Royal College of Music as a Frederick and Phyllis Treby Scholar.

Chris Hardy Clarinettist Chris is a graduate of the RNCM, playing with the Hallé, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic and Opera North.

Nathan Holroyd Saxophonist Nathan is the Programming Administrator at the RNCM. He also plays with the Aaben Duo alongside harpist Jess Hughes.

Beth Machell Bass Clarinettist Beth is a graduate of the RNCM, having studied bass clarinet with Sarah Watts and Ausias Garrigos.

Alice Keegan Bassoonist Alice graduated the RNCM as a Dolly Knowles Trust Scholar, studying with Adam Mackenzie and Simon Davies.
